Typical Day

Pre-K and Kindergarten

Far from a daycare, our Pre-K and Kindergarten programs allow the youngest members of the MCHR family to grow and learn with structured, age-appropriate lessons.

Our teachers use a specially selected early childhood curriculum to set our earliest learners up for future success. Every day, our students are engaged and challenged to build self-esteem, create a positive attitude toward learning, and improve social skills by interacting with classmates.

Academically, Pre-K and K students learn how to recognize and write letters, words, and numbers and develop important foundational skills in ELA and math. Our academic program is enriched with field trips, arts and music, and physical education.

“In Pre-K, I love that we have centers, show and tell, and play time with my friends.”
—Noah, Pre-K 4

Grades 1 and 2

In 1st and 2nd grade, MCHR students dig into engaging topics while covering important lessons that will help them in the future. Every lesson builds on the last, creating a pathway to success. Students come away with a variety of strategies to solve math equations, read short stories, and write.

In math, students will master solving word problems, telling time, expressing length, multiplication, graphs, shapes, and patterns.

In ELA, they tackle longer writing projects and learn to plan, draft, and edit. Students learn to analyze writing while exploring topics like ancient civilization, Greek mythology, and the War of 1812.

Our MCHR 1st and 2nd graders continue to grow socially, developing their abilities to listen attentively, accept responsibility, work cooperatively, complete homework, and respect others.

“In 1st grade, I love that we get to use a Smart Board and different toys to learn math and make it easier.”
—Kamilah, 1st grade

Grades 3 to 5

MCHR’s 3rd-5th grade students take skills they learned in earlier grades to the next level, expanding their analytical abilities, writing complex pieces, and exploring a variety of math topics.

In ELA, students journey through Ancient Rome, the Viking Age, and Medieval Times. They express their emotion through poetry, discover Earth’s many layers in geology, explore the battles of the American Revolution, and take a trip to Treasure Island.

In math, students become experts in fractions, decimals, multiplication, and division. They excel with angles and learn to calculate area, volume, and perimeter.

There are also plenty of enrichment opportunities outside of class. Our MCHR students in 3rd-5th grade get hands-on experience with orchestra with the New York Philharmonic. Through Dancing Classrooms, students learn to tango, waltz, merengue, foxtrot, and rumba from a professional dancer.

“I’m really grateful to be in my school because whenever I have questions or don’t understand what I’m learning, all the teachers make time to help us understand.”
—Hanna, 4th grade

Grades 6 to 8

MCHR students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are challenged by our teachers as they continue to grow into thoughtful and caring young women and men, eager to learn.

Middle school students study engaging topics in each subject area, from stories of heroes and courage in ELA, to volcanoes and genetics in science, and linear equations in math.

Our high school placement program works with our middle school students as they start thinking about their next steps after MCHR. Our team supports families at each step of the admissions process, making the application process manageable and ensuring that high school is affordable for each MCHR student.
